Desilting Solutions was engaged by Port of Townsville to undertake dredging works inside a 1600mm wide culvert which drained a large portion of industrial land under port control.
This hydraulic capacity of this culvert was compromised by a build up of approximately 600-800mm of silt and sediment which had accumulated over the last 10 years. Access to the culvert for the dredge was facilitated by the cutting of a 4000mm long by 1600mm wide opening in the top of the culvert, with the dredge being lowered into the culvert by crane.
As part of the works the Port was eager to try out GeoTubes for the first time and understand the management thereof in terms of both polymer dosing and effluent water clarity.
Desilting Solutions successfully managed the desilting of the culvert through the dosing of polymer slurry stream and the use of GeoTubes. This resulted in the effluent being suitable for release back into the culvert, as supervised by the Ports own environmental team.
